Better Stands, an initiative led by the Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE) program, has completed its first year with more than 70 members adopting the framework across Europe, North America, South America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. The program is helping the global exhibitions industry transition toward more sustainable and reusable stand construction practices.
Industry Collaboration Driving Sustainable Event Practices
Hosted by the Net Zero Carbon Events (NZCE) program, Better Stands is supported by UFI and the International Federation of Exhibition and Event Services (IFES). The initiative was officially launched during the UFI European Events Week in Thessaloniki.
The program aims to reduce the environmental impact of exhibitions by encouraging reusable stand designs and minimizing the use of disposable construction materials. Through a structured framework, event organizers, exhibitors, contractors, and venues can assess and improve the sustainability of their exhibition stands.
Better Stands Framework Encourages Reusability
The Better Stands framework provides stakeholders with a common system for evaluating stand reusability and identifying opportunities for improvement. A dedicated steering committee and industry working groups oversee the initiative, ensuring broad representation from across the exhibition sector.
When exhibition stands fail to meet the framework’s reusability standards, participants can use the assessment process to identify areas for enhancement before future events. This collaborative approach promotes better planning, smarter procurement decisions, improved site safety, efficient material usage, and measurable sustainability outcomes.
Early Success Stories Demonstrate Positive Impact
Several organizations participating in the program have already reported measurable improvements after implementing Better Stands across multiple event cycles.
One of the earliest adopters, ReThink Hong Kong, increased the proportion of raw-space stands achieving Gold certification from 43% in 2024 to 60% in 2025. According to program data, the improvement contributed to reduced waste generation and lower logistics requirements.
Meanwhile, Informa Markets LATAM introduced Better Stands certificates for exhibitors choosing reusable stand solutions. The initiative reportedly boosted exhibitor engagement and encouraged wider adoption of sustainable stand construction throughout its events.
Assessor Training Strengthens Global Consistency
To support growing adoption, Better Stands has expanded its assessor training program and recently launched its second training round. The program equips assessors with the skills needed to conduct consistent pre-event and onsite evaluations using the Better Stands Framework’s 10-point assessment plan.
The framework classifies exhibition stands into four categories based on reusability: Single Use, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. As participation expands internationally, standardized assessor training helps maintain consistency and credibility across different markets and event formats.
Plans for Expansion in Year Two
Following a successful first year, Better Stands plans to broaden its educational resources, practical tools, training opportunities, and industry participation. The program also intends to improve access to reusable stand solutions throughout the exhibition supply chain.
As sustainability becomes a higher priority for event organizers, exhibitors, and service providers, Better Stands is emerging as a practical framework for reducing waste and encouraging responsible event construction practices worldwide.
Growing Momentum for Sustainable Exhibitions
The success of Better Stands highlights a broader shift within the exhibitions industry toward more sustainable and circular event delivery models. By providing a shared framework and measurable standards, the initiative is helping stakeholders take meaningful steps toward reducing environmental impact while improving operational efficiency.
