Mizoram Health workers go on indefinite strike for pay and regularization

According to sources, Mizoram is facing a manpower crisis amidst rising covid-19 cases as contractual health care workers have called for an indefinite strike. More than 2000 Mizoram Health workers staff have stopped coming to work since Monday and demanding certain benefits from the government including regularization, regular pay, medical reimbursement, and transfer allowance.

The National Health Mission Employees Union of Mizoram (NEUM) said that the strike was to be called off on Wednesday but after the meeting with the government officials a day ago ended in deadlock, the strike will continue for an indefinite period.

Malsawmtluanga Hauhnar, President of NEUM said that the union wanted to end the strike if the government agreed to meet at least two of its demands. He further added that several Mizoram health workers have been working on a contractual basis for over 20 years. He requested the government to take action on the regularization of the employees at least in a phased manner. Also, the workers are being paid irregularly for the past 10 years due for some unknown reason especially since the state stopped receiving direct central funding.

Mizoram Health department officials did not make any comments. On Wednesday, the government instructed the officials to ensure that the health care workers resume their work from Thursday onwards.

On July 8, the government banned strikes under the Mizoram Essential Service Maintenance Act.
In July last year, the NEUM also called a mass casual leave which was called off after the assurance by the state government to form a body to analyze the problems of the health care workers. The union leader noted that the government did nothing to meet their demands and even the report was not tabled at the cabinet meeting after a year has already passed.
