Model Railway Quest Show Makes Successful Clacton Debut with Over 800 Visitors

The Model Railway Quest Show made its first-ever appearance in Clacton-on-Sea on 14 December, drawing strong interest from hobbyists and families alike. Hosted at the Clacton Leisure Centre, the one-day event welcomed more than 800 visitors, highlighting the growing popularity of model railways in the region.

The Clacton edition of the show featured 25 model railway layouts, each representing a wide range of historical periods, geographic locations, and creative themes. Among the standout attractions was Tsuriito, believed to be the world’s first underwater model railway layout, which captured widespread attention. Another unique display was Ian Redman’s miniature railway built inside a coconut shell, showcasing remarkable craftsmanship on a tiny scale.

A major highlight was “Brief Encounter Monochrome” by Dawn Quest, a layout painted entirely in 32 shades of grey, inspired by the classic 1954 film Brief Encounter. Visitors also admired Dave Carson’s “New Walmington Pier,” depicting an Edwardian-era pier tramway, and Fred Gallone’s detailed model of Brightlingsea, which reflected strong local character.

In addition to the exhibition layouts, the show offered interactive model railway displays, allowing visitors to try their hand at driving model trains, making it an engaging experience for all age groups.

The event also hosted 18 trade stands, offering a wide selection of new and pre-owned locomotives, railway memorabilia, accessories, and modelling supplies, supporting both beginners and experienced railway modellers.

Commenting on the event’s success, Dawn Quest, organiser of the Model Railway Quest Show, said she was thrilled with the response and pleased to see such enthusiasm for the hobby in Clacton. She confirmed that plans are already underway for a return in 2026.

Model Railway Quest, which already hosts annual shows in Hastings, Sevenoaks, and London, continues to expand its reach. Quest, a long-time model railway enthusiast and TV producer, also runs the Women Railway Modellers Facebook group, aimed at encouraging greater female participation in the hobby.
