Dubai is all set to expand its Gaming Industry

It is of no surprise that Dubai is using the gaming and eSports sector to strengthen its economy as the digital world and technology are growing at a rapid pace. So, the gaming industry and digital entertainment have an essential place in the newly added 98 economic activities of Dubai. 

Majed Al Suwaidi, MD Dubai, said that Dubai offers an essential environment for the sector’s growth. Also, the sector will become the main contributor to the GDP of the country. The gaming sector’s global value will be $315 billion in the next four years.

He further added that Dubai is a global tech hub and already a gaming sector leader in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The gaming industry in the MENA region contributes a revenue of $170 billion to the global revenue of the industry.

Scope of the gaming industry in Dubai

There are great opportunities in the gaming industry in Dubai as 28 percent of the MENA region population is between the age group of 15 to 29 years. The more young people in the region having an interest in gaming and also being digitally literate is a sign of good scope for the industry. According to the reports of the Global Mobile Operators’ Association (GSMA), the number of smartphone users in the MENA region will rise to 565 million by 2025. Thus, experts suggest it is suitable for the beginning and growth of Dubai’s gaming industry.

Al Suwaidi says that Dubai has the highest gaming expenditure per capita, especially in the MENA region. The statement is backed by the fact that an individual in UAE spends 14 hours per week on average playing games and also country’s 38 percent population is under the age of 25 years.

The Business Registration & Licensing (BRL) sector under the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET) which has implemented the new economic activities among the various important sectors, believes that the specific emphasis on the gaming sector would bring economic diversification.

Waleed Abdul Malik, Director of Registration at BRL, commented that Dubai is known for its business efficiency and superior infrastructure. Also, he pointed out Dubai has an advantage due to its geographical location as it is a gateway to the Middle East and the Asia Pacific region which is home to the world’s biggest gaming industry. Another important factor is that Dubai constantly adapts itself to the new emerging technologies which puts the country as a strong gaming industry leader.

According to Saeed Sharaf, Founder and CEO, eSport Middle East LLC, adding new economic activities in the gaming sector will additionally enhance Dubai’s position.

Also, The UAE has already given an idea of the scope of the eSports gaming industry by providing non-financial free zones in specific regions. Now, it’s time to take advantage of the industry as the BRL steps in giving great emphasis on this industry.

Recently, Global eSports Federation (GEF) revealed that Dubai will host the upcoming Global eSports Games in 2025. The announcement was made during the Global Esports event held at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

GEF Chief Executive, Paul J Foster said that they are excited to partner with Dubai and discover the opportunities in the region. Also, he appreciated Dubai for being a good host and always offering world-class settings.

GEF is a world-famous entity in the eSports sector that promotes the credibility, legitimacy, and prestige of eSports. It prioritizes the growth of a sustainable, healthy, safe eSports environment specially focused on responsible gaming.

At last, Al Suwaidi said that the fact that GEF chose Dubai to host its upcoming games event proves the capacity of Dubai’s emerging technology culture, superior infrastructure, and progressive mindset that will further expand the gaming industry.
