Sustainable travel specialist onboard:earth has launched Canopy & Coast, a new environmental initiative designed to help event organisers support nature restoration and climate action without the complexity of traditional carbon offsetting. The program enables live events to fund local and UK-wide environmental projects while also contributing to international climate justice initiatives through simple attendee donations.
The launch addresses one of the biggest challenges facing the events industry-measuring and offsetting travel-related emissions. Instead of requiring organisers to collect and analyse detailed travel data, Canopy & Coast offers a straightforward solution that delivers immediate and measurable environmental benefits through habitat restoration.
Simplifying Climate Action for the Events Industry
Recognising that carbon auditing can be time-consuming and resource-intensive, onboard:earth developed Canopy & Coast to make sustainability more accessible for event organisers. The initiative allows events to balance the environmental impact of audience travel by supporting verified restoration projects, eliminating the administrative burden often associated with traditional carbon offset programs.
By focusing on tangible conservation efforts, the scheme enables organisers to demonstrate visible environmental action while engaging attendees in meaningful sustainability initiatives.
Supporting Forests, Marine Ecosystems and Global Climate Justice
The Canopy & Coast program funds a range of carefully selected environmental projects across the UK and internationally.
Within the UK, organisers can choose local tree-planting initiatives that create a lasting environmental legacy in the regions where events take place. The program also contributes to the restoration of the country’s marine ecosystems through seagrass conservation projects while supporting the protection of threatened rainforests in other parts of the world.
This combination of local and international projects allows event organisers to contribute to biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and climate resilience through a single initiative.
No Cost for Organisers and Simple for Attendees
One of the key advantages of Canopy & Coast is its ease of implementation. The program is offered at no cost to event organisers, making it an accessible sustainability solution regardless of event size.
Climate contributions are collected by adding small donations to event tickets or car parking passes, typically ranging from 25 pence to £5. The process requires no additional action from attendees, with donations seamlessly integrated into the booking experience.
This approach enables every visitor to contribute towards environmental restoration without extra administration, complicated calculations, or additional purchasing decisions.
From the Fields Among the First Organisations to Join
One of the first organisations to adopt Canopy & Coast is From the Fields, which is introducing the initiative at its Northern Lights events in Leeds and Manchester.
Through a small mandatory car parking levy donated to the program, the organisers aim to fund the planting of 500 trees locally, support the planting of 1,500 trees by communities across the Global South, protect 500 acres of threatened rainforest, and contribute to the restoration of UK seagrass marine ecosystems.
The initiative demonstrates how relatively small attendee contributions can collectively generate significant environmental impact.
Event Organisers Welcome the Initiative
Commenting on the partnership, Ben Robinson, Director of From the Fields, said the organisation is proud to support Canopy & Coast and believes audiences will appreciate seeing how small individual donations combine to create meaningful environmental outcomes.
He noted that the initiative offers an opportunity for attendees to become part of a collective effort to protect nature while supporting sustainability across the live events sector.
An Alternative to Traditional Carbon Offsetting
Canopy & Coast has been developed specifically for event organisers seeking a practical and transparent way to acknowledge their environmental impact without navigating the complexities of conventional carbon offsetting.
The program enables organisers to build trust with audiences by supporting verified environmental restoration projects and sharing clear, relatable sustainability stories rather than relying solely on carbon calculations. This approach reflects the growing demand for tangible environmental action and greater transparency within the events industry.
Trees+ Program Continues Alongside Canopy & Coast
While Canopy & Coast focuses on accessible nature restoration, onboard:earth confirmed that its existing Trees+ carbon offset program will continue to operate alongside the new initiative.
Trees+ remains available for organisations pursuing Net Zero objectives or requiring verified carbon offset solutions as part of their broader sustainability strategies. Together, the two programs provide event organisers with flexible options to support environmental responsibility based on their individual sustainability goals.
Strengthening Sustainability Across Live Events
The launch of Canopy & Coast reflects the events industry’s increasing commitment to practical, measurable sustainability initiatives. By removing barriers associated with carbon accounting and making climate action easier for organisers and attendees alike, onboard:earth aims to encourage wider participation in environmental restoration.
As more event organisers look for credible ways to reduce their environmental impact while engaging audiences in sustainability efforts, Canopy & Coast offers a simple yet impactful model that supports local biodiversity, marine conservation, rainforest protection, and global climate resilience through collective action.
