Aberdeen Hosts One of Europe’s Leading Geoscience Conferences
The European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE) Annual Conference & Exhibition 2026 concluded successfully at P&J Live, bringing together more than 6,000 delegates and 200 exhibitors from around the world. Held from 8–11 June 2026, with related activities spanning six days, the prestigious event generated an estimated £13.2 million (approximately US$17.6 million) in economic impact for Aberdeen, highlighting the city’s growing reputation as a premier destination for international conferences and exhibitions.
The 87th edition of the EAGE Annual Conference & Exhibition welcomed geoscientists, engineers, researchers, academics, energy professionals, students, and policymakers to discuss the latest technological innovations and challenges shaping the future of the global energy and geoscience sectors.
Theme Focuses on Technology, Innovation and Collaboration
The 2026 conference was organized under the theme “Maximizing Value Through Technology and Partnership,” emphasizing the importance of innovation, digital transformation, and international collaboration in addressing the changing needs of the energy industry.
Throughout the four-day conference, delegates participated in more than 1,400 technical presentations, keynote sessions, panel discussions, workshops, and networking events. The comprehensive programme covered topics such as subsurface exploration, energy transition, carbon storage, artificial intelligence, digital technologies, reservoir engineering, and sustainable resource management.
The event provided an important platform for professionals from academia, industry, and government to exchange knowledge, share research findings, and explore new business and research partnerships.
Global Participation Reinforces Aberdeen’s Position
The EAGE Annual Conference has previously been hosted in major European cities including Vienna, London, Paris, Madrid, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam. Bringing the event to Aberdeen further reinforced the city’s status as one of Europe’s leading centres for energy, engineering, and geoscience expertise.
The conference attracted participants from across the global energy industry, offering exhibitors valuable opportunities to showcase advanced technologies, innovative services, and research developments to an international audience. The strong attendance reflected continued confidence in face-to-face events as an essential platform for professional networking and industry collaboration.
Conference Generates Significant Economic Benefits
Beyond the conference halls, the event delivered a substantial economic boost to Aberdeen and the surrounding region. According to organizers, the arrival of more than 6,000 delegates significantly increased demand for accommodation, hospitality, transportation, and local services throughout the city.
Hotels across Aberdeen experienced exceptionally high occupancy, with many reaching full capacity during the conference period. Restaurants, cafés, bars, retail outlets, taxi operators, and tourism businesses also benefited from the influx of international visitors, demonstrating the important contribution that large-scale business events make to the local economy.
The estimated £13.2 million economic impact reflects direct visitor spending as well as broader business activity generated during the six-day event.
P&J Live Successfully Delivers a World-Class Event
P&J Live once again demonstrated its ability to host large international exhibitions and conferences. The state-of-the-art venue welcomed more than 200 exhibiting companies while accommodating thousands of delegates attending technical sessions, networking meetings, exhibitions, and social events.
The successful delivery of the conference also created employment opportunities within the local events industry. P&J Live reported approximately 5,500 hours of casual staffing during the build-up, live event operations, and dismantling phases, supporting local workers and event service providers.
Steve Daun, Head of Sales, Associations at Legends Global, praised the collaborative effort behind the event’s success.
“EAGE Annual 2026 has been an outstanding success for P&J Live, Aberdeen and the wider region. Welcoming more than 6,000 participants, 200 exhibitors and delivering over 1,400 presentations demonstrates both the scale of the event and the strength of the partnerships that made it possible.”
Outreach Programme Inspires Future Scientists and Engineers
Alongside the professional conference, the event included an EAGE Outreach Day designed to encourage young people to explore careers in geoscience, engineering, and the energy sector.
More than 200 students from 11 schools participated in interactive educational activities, scientific demonstrations, and career sessions led by industry experts. The programme introduced students to the opportunities available within geology, environmental science, engineering, and emerging energy technologies while encouraging interest in STEM education.
The outreach initiative highlighted EAGE’s commitment to developing future talent and ensuring that the next generation is equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to support the evolving global energy industry.
Aberdeen Showcases Its Energy and Research Expertise
Professor John Underhill, Interdisciplinary Director for Energy Transition at the University of Aberdeen, emphasized the significance of hosting the conference in a city recognized internationally for its expertise in energy, engineering, and geoscience.
He noted that bringing EAGE to Aberdeen allowed international delegates to experience the region’s research excellence while creating a lasting legacy through educational outreach, field trips, and engagement with local communities. The event also strengthened collaboration between universities, industry, and research institutions working on solutions for the global energy transition.
International Conferences Strengthen Aberdeen’s Economy
Destination partners involved in hosting the conference highlighted the broader value of attracting international association events to Aberdeen. Large-scale conferences such as EAGE not only generate millions of pounds in visitor spending but also enhance the city’s international reputation as a destination for business events, scientific research, and innovation.
The successful delivery of the conference demonstrates Aberdeen’s ability to host complex global events while supporting local businesses, creating employment, and attracting future international meetings and exhibitions.
