Jackie Boughton Transitions to Executive Consulting Role at Barbican After 12 Years of Commercial Leadership

Long-Serving Barbican Commercial Director to Lead Innovation and Growth Initiatives

Jackie Boughton, Director of Commercial at the Barbican, will transition from her full-time leadership role in September after serving the iconic London venue for 12 years. While stepping away from day-to-day responsibilities, Boughton will remain closely involved with the organisation as Executive Consultant, Innovation and Growth, where she will continue supporting strategic commercial development and business events initiatives.

Her new advisory role will see her working alongside Barbican Chief Executive Abigail Pogson and the senior leadership team on business events strategy, client engagement, market research, advocacy, innovation, and long-term commercial growth.

A Decade of Leadership and Commercial Success

Since joining the Barbican in 2014 as Head of Business Events, Jackie Boughton has played a pivotal role in transforming the venue’s commercial operations and strengthening its position within London’s competitive meetings and events sector.

Her leadership later expanded into the role of Director of Commercial, where she oversaw business events, hospitality services, bars, catering, and wider commercial activities. During her tenure, her contributions helped generate more than £80 million in revenue for the Barbican and the City of London Corporation.

Boughton’s strategic vision also helped establish the Barbican as one of London’s premier destinations for conferences, corporate meetings, exhibitions, brand experiences, filming projects, hospitality events, and international business gatherings.

Extensive Industry Experience Across Hotels, Venues, and Tourism

Jackie Boughton brings decades of experience spanning hotels, destinations, event venues, agencies, and the travel industry. Earlier in her career, she worked with tour operators, travel agencies, and ground handling businesses, developing expertise in customer experience and international tourism.

She also became one of the first women to serve as a board director within a privately owned hotel and apartment group, marking an important milestone in her professional journey.

Her career portfolio further includes work on hotel global distribution systems, customer service training programmes, and the pre-opening mobilisation of Wembley Stadium alongside Delaware North, demonstrating her broad expertise across hospitality and major venue operations.

Continuing Leadership Across the Business Events Industry

Although transitioning into a consulting position, Boughton will remain actively engaged across the wider events and meetings industry.

She will continue serving as a Board Director of the Association of Event Venues and Drumworks while also maintaining her role on the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) UK & Ireland Executive Committee.

Her continued involvement reflects her long-standing commitment to advancing the UK’s business events sector and supporting collaboration across venues, destinations, and industry stakeholders.

Barbican Leadership Praises Jackie Boughton’s Contribution

Barbican Chief Executive Abigail Pogson acknowledged Boughton’s significant contribution to the organisation over the past 12 years.

According to Pogson, Jackie has played an exceptional role in expanding the Barbican’s commercial offering, strengthening its position in the international business events market, and building long-lasting relationships throughout London, the UK, and global markets.

Pogson also noted that Boughton’s extensive market knowledge and industry expertise will remain valuable as the Barbican enters its next phase of commercial growth and strategic development.

Reflecting on her journey, Boughton described the Barbican as a unique institution and expressed pride in the achievements of the commercial team.

She highlighted not only the growth in revenue and business performance but also the team’s commitment to supporting clients, audiences, artists, and partners with professionalism, creativity, integrity, and care.

Her comments underscore the collaborative culture that has helped position the Barbican among London’s leading conference and event venues.

Industry Leaders Recognise Her Impact on London’s Events Sector

Tracy Halliwell, Director of Tourism, Conventions and Major Events at London & Partners, also praised Boughton’s contribution to London’s global reputation as a leading meetings and events destination.

She noted that Boughton’s work has not only elevated the Barbican’s profile but has also showcased London’s creativity, innovation, and international appeal for conferences, exhibitions, and corporate events.

Her advocacy has played an important role in promoting the capital’s business events ecosystem to organisers and international clients worldwide.

Barbican Business Events Continues Its Growth Journey

Following Boughton’s transition, the Barbican’s commercial venue operations will continue under its senior leadership team, with her providing strategic guidance and support throughout the transition period.

Located in the heart of the City of London, the Barbican remains one of the UK’s leading conference and international arts venues, offering facilities for meetings ranging from intimate boardroom sessions to large-scale conferences accommodating up to 2,000 delegates.

As the venue continues to evolve, Jackie Boughton’s ongoing advisory role is expected to support future innovation, strengthen client relationships, and contribute to the continued growth of London’s thriving business events and MICE industry.
