Madhya Pradesh to Build Largest Convention and Exhibition Centre in Bhopal, Boosting India’s MICE Industry

Madhya Pradesh Announces Mega Convention and Exhibition Centre in Bhopal

In a major step towards strengthening its business tourism and MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) sector, the Government of Madhya Pradesh has announced plans to develop the state’s largest Convention and Exhibition Centre in Bhopal. The ambitious project will be executed in collaboration with the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), the organisation responsible for developing and managing Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, one of India’s most advanced convention venues.

The upcoming Convention and Exhibition Centre in Bhopal is expected to transform the city into a leading destination for national and international conferences, trade fairs, exhibitions, corporate events, and investment summits. The project reflects the state government’s commitment to creating world-class infrastructure that supports economic growth, attracts investment, and strengthens Madhya Pradesh’s position in India’s rapidly expanding MICE industry.

25-Acre Project to Transform Bhopal’s Business Landscape

The proposed facility will be developed on a 25-acre site located in the Satgarhi Industrial Area at Kolar in Bhopal. The strategic location has been selected to ensure excellent connectivity while supporting the region’s industrial and commercial development.

Designed as a modern integrated business events destination, the project will include a world-class convention centre, spacious exhibition halls, a large hotel, meeting facilities, and supporting infrastructure capable of hosting large-scale domestic and international events. Once completed, the venue is expected to become the largest convention and exhibition facility in Madhya Pradesh.

Government officials believe the development will significantly enhance Bhopal’s capacity to host prestigious business events while creating new opportunities for tourism, hospitality, logistics, and event management industries.

Capacity of Up to 8,000 Delegates

One of the key highlights of the project is its impressive seating and event capacity. The proposed Convention and Exhibition Centre in Bhopal is expected to accommodate between 6,000 and 8,000 delegates, making it suitable for international conventions, industry expos, government summits, trade exhibitions, and large corporate gatherings.

The scale of the new facility will provide Madhya Pradesh with the ability to compete with established convention destinations across India. It will also allow the state to attract events that currently take place in major metropolitan cities such as Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.

Industry experts believe that large-capacity venues are increasingly important as India continues to witness rapid growth in business tourism and international trade events.

Inspired by Hyderabad International Convention Centre

The upcoming convention complex will reportedly draw inspiration from the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC), one of India’s most successful venues for international conferences and exhibitions.

According to government officials, the new Bhopal facility is expected to be three to four times larger than the 2,000-seat convention centre currently under construction near Minto Hall in the city. The expanded capacity and comprehensive infrastructure will allow organisers to host multiple events simultaneously while offering premium facilities for delegates and exhibitors.

The project aims to incorporate international standards in event management infrastructure, making it attractive to both domestic and global event organisers.

Government Investment and Funding Plan

The Convention and Exhibition Centre project will be jointly supported by the Government of India and the Government of Madhya Pradesh. The Central Government is expected to contribute ₹50 crore towards the development through ITPO, while the remaining investment will be undertaken by the state government.

To support long-term development in the region, the Madhya Pradesh government has earmarked approximately 172 acres in the Satgarhi area for industrial development. Officials have indicated that monetisation of a portion of this land will help finance the convention centre project while encouraging additional commercial investments around the site.

This integrated planning approach is expected to create a thriving business district around the convention complex, attracting hotels, offices, retail spaces, and supporting services.

Construction Expected After Global Investors Summit 2027

Construction of the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Bhopal is expected to commence after the Global Investors Summit (GIS) 2027, which will once again be hosted in the Madhya Pradesh capital.

The summit is expected to showcase the state’s investment potential across manufacturing, infrastructure, tourism, renewable energy, technology, and industrial development. Following the event, the government plans to move ahead with the construction of the convention centre as part of its broader infrastructure development strategy.

The timing also reflects the state’s long-term vision of establishing permanent facilities capable of hosting future editions of major investment summits and international conferences.

Part of a Broader Strategy to Strengthen the MICE Sector

The announcement comes shortly after Madhya Pradesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Spain-based Fira Barcelona International, one of the world’s leading exhibition and convention organisers.

The partnership aims to strengthen the state’s exhibition ecosystem, introduce global best practices, and develop internationally competitive MICE infrastructure. The collaboration is expected to improve event management standards, attract international exhibitions, and position Madhya Pradesh as a preferred destination for global business events.

Together with the proposed convention centre, these initiatives demonstrate the state’s commitment to becoming an important hub for conferences, exhibitions, and investment promotion in central India.

Boost for Business Tourism and Hospitality Industry

The new Convention and Exhibition Centre is expected to generate substantial economic benefits beyond the events industry. Large conventions and exhibitions typically create demand across multiple sectors, including hotels, restaurants, transportation, retail, tourism, logistics, and professional services.

The integrated hotel planned within the project will support delegates attending multi-day conferences, while surrounding hospitality businesses are expected to benefit from increased visitor arrivals. Local businesses, event organisers, technology providers, caterers, decorators, and service companies are also likely to experience significant growth opportunities.

As India continues to expand its global business engagement, high-quality convention infrastructure is becoming increasingly important for attracting international exhibitions and investment forums.

Bhopal Set to Emerge as Central India’s Business Events Hub

The development of the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Bhopal represents one of the most significant infrastructure investments in Madhya Pradesh’s MICE sector. By combining world-class facilities with strategic partnerships and government support, the project is expected to elevate Bhopal’s profile as a premier destination for conferences, exhibitions, trade fairs, and investment events.

Once operational, the venue will not only strengthen the state’s business tourism ecosystem but also contribute to employment generation, economic development, and increased global visibility. With strong government backing, modern infrastructure, and growing investor interest, Bhopal is well positioned to emerge as one of India’s leading business events destinations over the coming years.
