Tesla dismisses almost 229 workers from its autopilot team

Elon Musk-owned Tesla has dismissed almost 229 workers from its autopilot team and shut down one of its offices in the US. The company has laid off the employees from its San Mateo office in which 276 workers were employed, confirmed in a regulatory filing in California state in the US that is seen by TechCrunch. The report said that the remaining 47 employees may be sent to work in Tesla’s Buffalo Autopilot office.

Furthermore, the report added that most of the workers were in relatively low-skilled, low waged jobs like Autopilot data labeling in which a worker has to determine whether Tesla’s algorithm identified an object well or poorly.

Tesla employs more than 1 lakhs employees across its offices and facilities.

Last month, the CEO of Tesla, Elon Musk announced a 10 percent reduction in the salaried employees and these layoffs are part of this announcement. The company started the layoffs after the Elon Musk’s announcement consequently Tesla’s total workforce will be roughly reduced by 3.5 percent
Employees who were fired last month from Tesla hired a team of lawyers who have sought emergency protection for the dismissed workers from a US court.

In a proposal filed in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas, the lawyers asked the judge to restrict the ability of Tesla to continue pursuing releases of employees in exchange for one week of severance.

The plaintiff accused the company that it did not provide 60 days advance notice essential by federal law during the dismissals.
