HKECIA Elects Wendy Lai as New Chairman
The Hong Kong Exhibition & Convention Industry Association (HKECIA) has appointed Wendy Lai as its new chairman, marking a historic milestone as she becomes the first woman to lead the association in its 36-year history. The appointment was confirmed during the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), where Lai officially succeeded Stuart Bailey, who concluded a decade-long tenure as chairman.
Stuart Bailey Named Honorary Life President
In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the exhibition and convention industry, Stuart Bailey was awarded the title of Honorary Life President. During his ten years as chairman, Bailey guided the association through significant industry changes, including the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and the sector’s recovery efforts in the years that followed.
Extensive Industry Experience
Lai brings more than 20 years of experience in the exhibition industry to her new leadership role. She has been actively involved with the HKECIA executive committee for several years and most recently served as executive vice-chair. Professionally, she holds the position of Vice-President of Global Sources Exhibitions, overseeing the organizer’s international sourcing exhibitions in Hong Kong.
Commitment to Strengthening Hong Kong’s Exhibition Industry
Following her appointment, Lai emphasized her commitment to working closely with association members, industry partners, and government authorities to further enhance Hong Kong’s position as a leading international exhibition destination. She highlighted the importance of collaboration in driving long-term growth and maintaining the city’s competitive edge in the global MICE sector.
Exhibition Industry Shows Strong Post-Pandemic Recovery
Lai noted that Hong Kong’s exhibition industry has demonstrated remarkable resilience and adaptability in recent years. Large-scale exhibitions have experienced a strong rebound, with event numbers recovering and, in many cases, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. She stated that this recovery reflects Hong Kong’s continued attractiveness as a global business and trading hub.
Government Support Boosts Industry Growth
Acknowledging the role of government-backed incentive programs, Lai said these initiatives have played a crucial role in supporting the industry’s post-pandemic recovery. The support has enabled organizers to introduce innovative themed exhibitions while expanding established flagship events. These efforts have further strengthened Hong Kong’s position as the MICE hub of the Greater Bay Area and reinforced its reputation as the Trade Fair Capital of Asia.
Addressing Future Challenges and Opportunities
Looking ahead, Lai recognized that uncertainties in the global economy and increasing regional competition present ongoing challenges for the exhibition sector. Despite these pressures, she stressed that HKECIA remains committed to ensuring Hong Kong continues to serve as a vital international gateway connecting businesses from East and West.
Focus on International Expansion and Sustainable Growth
Lai stated that maintaining the strength of Hong Kong’s established trade fairs while expanding their international reach will remain a key priority. She also emphasized the importance of enhancing value for exhibitors and visitors through innovation and industry collaboration. With continued government support and sustainable development initiatives, Lai expressed confidence that Hong Kong’s exhibition industry will unlock new growth opportunities and further strengthen its position as one of the world’s leading exhibition and trade hubs.
